Borrowing Perspectives: The Shortcut to Next-Level Thinking

Borrowing Perspectives for a Powerful Mindset Shift

Sitting in my sweltering garage studio after tripping the breaker again, I had one of those moments that changes everything. You know the type, when you realize you’ve been your own worst enemy without even knowing it. It’s a moment that forces a mindset shift and a surge of self awareness about your own life, along with the desire to finally move forward.

“You can be right or you can be rich.” That quote hit me 15 years ago at T. Harv Eker’s Millionaire Mind Intensive, and it just smacked me in the face again during our Genesis X program experience.

Here’s the thing: if your current thoughts built your current reality, you’re going to need new ideas to build what comes next. And sometimes, those game-changing thoughts have to come from someone else, often at the exact point when you feel fear and need to take a deep breath before acting.

This isn’t about copying what successful people do. It’s about learning how they think. It’s about borrowing their perspective and applying it to your situation. Because of the gap between where you are and where you want to be? It’s mostly made up of the beliefs you hold and the stories you tell yourself about what’s possible in life, no matter your current circumstances.

Why You Can’t See Your Own Blind Spots

The Problem with Being “Right”

Being “right” about your limitations is the fastest way to stay exactly where you are.

Think about it. When someone suggests a new approach, what’s your first reaction? “That won’t work for me.” “I’ve tried that before.” “It’s different for them.” Sound familiar?

These aren’t just casual thoughts. They’re self sabotage patterns, invisible challenges that quietly run the show. And they’re hard to notice because we’ve collected so much evidence to prove them true, evidence we ignore because it feels safer.

It’s strange how most people can spot faulty thinking in others instantly, but when it comes to our own mindset? We’re basically blind.

During my recent Genesis experience, I felt frustration listening to other people’s shares because I could see their excuses so clearly. Then it hit me. If I can see theirs, what am I missing about my own?

“We are here right now as a result of all of the thinking, all of the decisions, all of the perspectives that we have of life itself… and unless we change some of those ingredients… we unlock another possibility.”

That realization was uncomfortable. Every time someone challenged me about falling short of my goals, what came out next was a list of reasons, justifications, and beliefs that kept me stuck. All the ways I was “right” about my current circumstances, without stopping to identify where I might be wrong.

Borrowed Perspective: The Fast Track to New Possibilities

Borrowing perspective isn’t about copying someone’s strategy. It’s about adopting their way of seeing the world and practicing a growth mindset through intentional learning and daily practice.

When you find someone who has what you want, the real gold isn’t in what they’re doing. It’s in how they think about what they’re doing. It’s asking, “If I were them, how would I view this situation?”

What It Means to “Borrow” Someone Else’s Lens

This became crystal clear during mastermind sessions I’ve been part of. Top performers and coaches would look at my challenges and see possibilities I couldn’t. Not because they were smarter, but because they weren’t operating from my mental baggage or my self-limiting beliefs.

“You are now stepping into the shoes of somebody who has what you want. You’re borrowing their perspective, their experience, and applying it to where you are.”

They’re standing a few rungs up the ladder. When they look down at what you’ve created, they have perspectives you simply don’t have yet.

The trick is being willing to listen even when it challenges your sense of certainty, your ideas, and everything you think you know, especially when your feeling is telling you to stay comfortable.

The Two Choices You Always Have

Keep Your Story or Build a New One

When faced with new information that challenges our reality, most people do the same thing: they defend their current story instead of questioning it.

“I don’t have the time.” “I can’t afford that.” “It won’t work for me.” These are beliefs that keep recreating the same results and worrying you into staying the same.

Here’s what I learned: you can write down all the reasons you’re “right” about your current situation. That list becomes your entry point to being successful (however you define that). Every excuse, every justification, every “that’s just how I am”. Those are the barriers between you and your next level.

The Genesis X program gave us homework that forced us to see how our own stories kept recycling. Once you recognize it, you can’t unsee it. And once you can’t unsee it, change becomes inevitable, and you begin to act differently.

Getting Unstuck Starts With the Right Questions

“How Can I?” is More Powerful Than “Can I?”The fastest way to break a mental pattern is to flip your questions.

When I wanted to join programs I couldn’t afford, my first thought was always “I can’t afford that.” But what happened when I changed it to “How can I afford this?” Everything shifted. The question invited possibilities instead of shutting them down.

Questions create space for solutions. Statements close that space and control the energy you put toward growth.

Here are five reframe prompts that work:

  • “I can’t do this” becomes “What needs to change for this to work?”
  • “That works for them, not for me” becomes “What are they doing differently that I can try?”
  • “I’ve tried everything” becomes “Have I really tried everything?”
  • “I don’t have time” becomes “Where is my time actually going?”
  • “I don’t know how” becomes “Who could show me?”

The magic is in how these questions force your brain to focus on answers instead of reasons why something won’t work.

Why Coaching and Paid Programs Accelerate This Shift

Self-reflection is hard without structure or support. You need someone outside your mental ecosystem to point out what you can’t see.

I’ve noticed something interesting: when I put money toward a program, I take it more seriously. There’s something about financial investment that creates momentum before the program even begins. It forces you to find the money, which often requires thinki
ng differently about what’s possible.

The Genesis and Genesis X programs helped challenge my limiting beliefs, but the real transformation started with the decision to enroll.

That decision required me to give up being “right” about not having the money and figure out how to make it happen, even when it felt impossible or when I was waiting for the “right” time.

You Don’t Need More Hustle, You Need New Thinking

Here’s what most people get wrong: they think they need to work harder or do more. But dedication alone isn’t enough if your mindset keeps pulling you back to the same place.

You can be incredibly dedicated for a day, even a week. But if it doesn’t align with how you see the world, it won’t stick. Real change happens when you shift how you filter information and make decisions, replacing mistakes from the past with strategies for the future.

Our Genesis facilitator, Cortland, had a way of holding people capable, meaning he saw us as capable even when we didn’t see it ourselves. That external perspective became a bridge to seeing ourselves differently. Sometimes you need someone else to believe in your capability before you can borrow that belief for yourself.

Breakthroughs aren’t about doing more. They’re about seeing differently with gratitude for the wisdom gained along the way.
