Rewriting Your Urgency Mindset: A Practical Guide for Entrepreneurs

As an entrepreneur and a mom, I spent years living with constant urgency — that pressure to move fast, fix everything, and push through the day. I thought this was part of having a strong entrepreneurial mindset.

In reality, I was confusing being “too busy” with progress, and like many aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners, I didn’t realize how much this reactive energy was stealing my focus, creativity, and emotional well-being.

Looking back, the shift I needed wasn’t another tool or strategy. It was a new mindset for entrepreneurs, one rooted in clarity, calm problem-solving, and a growth mindset, instead of a fixed mindset that keeps you stuck in fear, failure, and urgency.

This is the heart of the entrepreneurial journey: learning how to think, lead, and act with intention, not panic.

Why Urgency Alone Doesn’t Build a Strong Entrepreneurial Mindset

For years, I have always been the urgent one. I have treated everything with urgency. I love to check off things on a list, but the urgency has changed. This kind of “hustle energy” wasn’t actually helping me develop entrepreneurial skills or build the right mindset. It only made me reactive to external factors.

Like many entrepreneurs and business leaders, I equated urgency with value creation.

But urgency without intention:

  • kills creativity
  • limits innovation
  • blocks long-term vision
  • prevents continuous improvement

It also kept me from identifying opportunities because I was too busy putting out fires.

How “Being the Urgent One” Limits Problem Solving and Growth

My urgency didn’t come from strategy. It came from anxiety, fear of falling behind, and a fixed mindset that made every challenge feel like a crisis. And when you’re in this state, your communication skills, decision-making ability, and creative thinking all take a hit.

This is why entrepreneurship education often emphasizes mindset first. The right mindset helps entrepreneurs manage risk, build confidence, and take calculated risks instead of reacting impulsively.

The Moment Everything Shifted: A 14-Foot Wall and a Wake-Up Call

Seeing “Impossible” in Front of Me

During the Atlas leadership retreat that I attended with Avram, we faced a 14-foot wall. The rule: the group had to get all 52 people over using only the flat front surface. No ropes. No ladders. No fancy tools.

My first reaction? That’s impossible.

Many successful entrepreneurs describe moments like this — moments when a challenge seems too big, too heavy, or too risky. Even Steve Jobs talked about how innovation often begins with a belief that something seemingly impossible can be figured out.

Watching Others Use Intentional Urgency

While I froze, others immediately tapped into their entrepreneurial thinking. They strategized, communicated, and organized. They turned chaos into a system. They showed leadership, teamwork, and the kind of entrepreneurial traits that create new opportunities and move a company forward.

Their urgency wasn’t panic. It was belief, creativity, resourcefulness, and a clear vision — the exact qualities that give new businesses and small businesses a competitive edge in today’s world. That moment changed my reality; my definition of what was possible expanded.

Redefining Urgency: A Healthier Mindset for Entrepreneurs Who Want to Thrive

Urgency shouldn’t feel like fear. It should feel like purpose.

Entrepreneurial mindset refers to the ability to stay focused, take risks wisely, innovate, and think forward even when things feel uncertain. It’s not about working longer hours or doing more. It’s about bringing intentional energy to the things that matter most — your business, your family, your customers, and your future.

This is the mindset that leads to:

  • innovative solutions
  • value creation
  • long-term vision
  • strong leadership
  • confident decision-making
  • belief in your ability to succeed

This mindset is what separates reactive entrepreneurs from successful people who build companies, teams, and multiple ventures with clarity and confidence.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Rewriting Your Urgency Mindset

These steps help you shift from reactive urgency to intentional urgency — the kind that helps entrepreneurs innovate, grow, and build a competitive advantage.

Step 1: Notice Where You’re Reacting Instead of Creating

Write down two lists:

  • Reactive Tasks (driven by pressure, external factors, fear)
  • Creative Tasks (driven by vision, innovation, problem solving)

This helps you see where you’re wasting energy and where your natural entrepreneurial skills shine.

Step 2: Act Like Your Future Depends on It — Because It Does

This mindset helps entrepreneurs build confidence, passion, and purpose.

Ask yourself:

  • What would I stop tolerating if success was guaranteed?
  • Where am I letting fear dictate my decisions?
  • What bold action could create new opportunities this week?
  • How would I act if I believed my business could change my family’s life?

This is how you strengthen your risk tolerance and shift into a mindset of innovation and growth.

Step 3: Bring Urgency to the Micro, Patience to the Macro

Intentional urgency means:

  • taking small bold steps now
  • maintaining long-term vision
  • trusting the compound effect
  • releasing the need for immediate results

This is how successful entrepreneurs build confidence and resilience.

Step 4: Use People and Deadlines to Create Supportive Pressure

Entrepreneurs thrive around like-minded individuals.
Community gives you accountability, inspiration, and motivation to move forward.

Try:

  • joining entrepreneurship programs
  • enrolling in training or workshops
  • collaborating with teammates
  • scheduling events before you feel ready

This is the kind of pressure that pulls you toward success instead of pushing you toward burnout.

How This Mindset Shows Up at Home and in Business

In Business

This new mindset helps you:

  • identify opportunities faster
  • build strong teams
  • solve problems creatively
  • improve business models
  • innovate with confidence
  • communicate clearly
  • develop leadership traits
  • create long-term success

It’s the mindset that helps companies thrive, employees grow, and customers feel supported.

At Home

When your business energy is grounded and intentional:

  • you’re more present with your kids
  • you model confidence, resilience, and problem solving
  • you show them how to pursue goals with passion and purpose
  • you feel more balanced and fulfilled

This is value creation in its most personal form.
